About

Who is she? What’s on her mind? What’s her story?

These are questions that The Muse Inks raises for everyone to ponder. We often see women in art and the media—the center of attention, focal point of the gaze, be it on canvas, onscreen, or in imaginations. Women are made to be models and muses. They’re used as subjects, but if people don’t bother seeing beyond the surface to learn what truly makes up their narratives, women end up becoming objects. We look at women all the time, but do we know their experiences?

The Muse Inks is a Filipina-owned blog and online media platform specifically created to reframe the focus of narratives onto “the muse”—women, females, ladies, girls, anyone identifying as a woman. The Muse Inks is all about the musings of what life is like for women, what struggles there are, how one can be empowered through them, or why it’s even important to consider women’s subjectivities, especially in their representations in art and the media or how these, in turn, relate to reality.

The Muse Inks is a new take on the phrase, “the musings”—musings of women’s unique subjectivities, struggles, and stories. Onscreen, offscreen. In art and in reality. We, women, have our own stories to tell, hence, the muse now takes up the pen and inks her experiences out into the world. We are not merely a face. We are the face of the quill. Because after all…

Women are not just muses—we are makers, too.

Vision

The Muse Inks envisions becoming an embodiment of online and social media where expression and empowerment of women’s narratives, both in art and in reality, are emphasized.

The Mind Behind the Muse Inks

Gabrielle Lopez goes by many names—Abby, Mae, Elle, Brie, all the nicknames she can think of like the Gemini that she is. She’s also gone under a secret pen name as a ghostwriter of books but now uses her true name as the proud author of “The ‘Before 20’ Bucket List”, among other future stories. Now, she adds a new name to the list: The Muse Inks.

Having graduated with a Communications degree and worked for publications writing articles and managing content, Gabrielle decided to create her own virtual safe space open to everyone, especially those who identify as women. As The Muse Inks, she writes women-centric narratives, analyzes the female gaze in film, ponders the everyday experience of the woman, and shares her own artworks.

By being “the muse” that “inks” these stories into people’s consciousness, Gabrielle hopes to inspire people with the mindset that women are not just women. We are not merely objects and participants in other people’s tales. We are subjects in our own right, each with unique stories to tell in different ways and mediums. We may be inspirations to works of art, but we are artists, too. We are thinkers, we are writers, we are creators. Women are not just muses—we are makers, too.
